In the past girls had been the guardians of social virtue. Now Young ladies frequently went out on dates unchaperoned, wearing rouge, sleeveless dresses, and stockings rolled down to the knee. They danced cheek to cheek with boyfriends to passionate jazz rhythms and scoffed when their parents called the saxophone an instrument of the devil. They smoked, drank bootleg whiskey, and role - or parked - in autos till sunrise, kissing and petting freely.
